Frequently asked questions
What are the new regime slabs for FY 2026-27?
Up to ₹4 lakh: nil · ₹4–8 lakh: 5% · ₹8–12 lakh: 10% · ₹12–16 lakh: 15% · ₹16–20 lakh: 20% · ₹20–24 lakh: 25% · above ₹24 lakh: 30%. Budget 2026 didn't change them.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?
In the new regime, yes — the 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) wipes out the tax if your taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. Salaried people also get the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from exceeding the extra income.
Which regime should I choose?
If your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and so on) are large, the old regime can still win. Enter them above — the calculator shows which regime is cheaper for you.
What are the old regime slabs?
Below 60: up to ₹2.5 lakh nil, ₹2.5–5 lakh 5%, ₹5–10 lakh 20%, above ₹10 lakh 30%. The nil limit is ₹3 lakh for ages 60–79 and ₹5 lakh for 80+. The 87A rebate makes income up to ₹5 lakh tax-free.
What is the Income-tax Act, 2025?
From 1 April 2026 the new Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act and uses the term “tax year” instead of financial year/assessment year. The slabs and rates for 2026-27 stay the same.
