Frequently asked questions
Why do I need rent receipts?
To claim the HRA exemption, your employer asks for proof of rent paid — usually rent receipts and, if the rent is over ₹1 lakh a year, the landlord's PAN. Submit them when your employer asks for investment proofs (usually January–March).
Is the landlord's PAN mandatory?
If the rent you pay is more than ₹1,00,000 in the year, your employer needs the landlord's PAN to allow the HRA exemption. If the landlord has no PAN, they give a written declaration instead.
Do I need a revenue stamp?
A receipt for a cash payment over ₹5,000 should carry a ₹1 revenue stamp signed by the landlord. Payments by bank transfer or UPI don't need one. Tick the box to add a space for it.
Does the landlord have to sign?
Yes — print the receipts and get them signed, or add the landlord's signature picture before downloading.
How much HRA can I claim?
Use our HRA Exemption Calculator — it works out the exempt amount from your salary, HRA and rent. Note that HRA exemption is only available in the old tax regime.
