Frequently asked questions

What is a check digit?

The last digit of every EAN or UPC is calculated from the others. If one digit is mistyped, the check digit no longer matches — that's how scanners and Amazon spot a wrong number.

Why does Amazon reject my barcode?

Either the number is wrong (failed check digit) or it isn't registered to your brand in the GS1 database. Amazon checks GTINs against GS1, so codes bought from resellers are often rejected.

What does 890 at the start mean?

EAN-13 numbers beginning 890 were issued by GS1 India. The prefix shows which GS1 office issued it, not where the product was made.

I don't have barcodes — can I still sell on Amazon?

If you make your own brand, you can apply for a GTIN exemption in Seller Central for the categories you sell in.

Catch barcode mistakes before Amazon does

One wrong digit in an EAN means a rejected listing or, worse, your product matched to someone else's page. Paste your list and fix errors before you upload.
