Frequently asked questions
What is an XML sitemap?
A file listing the pages of your website that you want search engines to find, with optional details like when each page last changed and which images it shows. It helps Google and Bing discover new and deep pages faster.
Do I need one if I use Shopify or WordPress?
Shopify, Wix and Squarespace — and WordPress with Yoast or Rank Math — already create one for you. For those sites, use this tool as a checker: it shows broken, redirected or noindex pages listed in your sitemap, and indexable pages that are missing from it.
Which pages go in the sitemap?
Only pages search engines should index: pages that load correctly, aren't marked noindex and don't point their canonical link to another page. Redirects are replaced by the address they lead to, and you can leave out any section, like /tag/ pages.
How much does it cost?
Free for up to 500 pages, no account needed. For bigger sites, sign in and add more pages with credits — 10 credits per 300 pages, up to 5,000 — with unused credits refunded. Hosted, automatically updated sitemaps are a separate monthly or yearly plan.
How do hosted sitemaps work?
Add your website, prove it's yours with one line in your robots.txt (the same line search engines use to find the sitemap), and choose a plan. We re-read your site every week (Starter) or every 3 days (Growth) and publish the fresh sitemap at a permanent address. If your site can't be read, we email you.
Can a sitemap be hosted on another website?
Yes. Google and Bing accept a sitemap on another domain when your own robots.txt lists it with a Sitemap line — that's how hosted sitemap services work. You can also submit it in Google Search Console.
How to create and submit a sitemap
- Enter your website and press Create sitemap. Up to 500 pages are read free.
- Download sitemap.xml and upload it to your website's main folder.
- Add it to robots.txt with a line like Sitemap: https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.
- Submit it in Google Search Console under Sitemaps.
Sitemap mistakes that cost you
- Listing broken or redirected pages — Google reports them as errors and trusts the sitemap less.
- Listing noindex pages — a mixed signal: “find this page” and “don't show it”.
- Forgetting new pages — a sitemap made once goes stale. Re-create it after adding pages, or use a hosted sitemap.
