What this does — and doesn't — do

Converting JPG to PNG saves the picture in a lossless format. That helps in some situations, but it's worth being clear about what it can't do:

  • It doesn't restore quality. The detail a JPG discarded when it was saved is gone, and a PNG made from it will look the same as the JPG.
  • It doesn't make a background transparent. JPG has no transparency to begin with. To cut out a background and get a transparent PNG, use the AI Background Remover.
  • The file will be bigger, often several times larger for a photograph.

When converting JPG to PNG is the right call

  • Editing and saving repeatedly. Each time you re-save a JPG it loses a bit more detail. Saving your working copy as PNG stops that.
  • A site, app or design tool needs PNG. Some uploads, templates and software only accept PNG.
  • Sharp graphics. For screenshots, diagrams, and images with text or flat colours, PNG keeps edges crisp.
  • You plan to add transparency later in an editor and want a lossless starting point.

If your goal is simply a smaller file, you want the opposite: keep it as JPG, or use the Image Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, with no signup and no watermark. Free conversions handle one file at a time, with no account needed. Pro adds batches of up to 100 files.

Will my PNG look better than the JPG?

No — the same. The advantage is that it won't lose further detail when you edit and save it again.

Can I convert an iPhone photo?

iPhone photos are often HEIC rather than JPG. Use the HEIC to JPG converter first if so.
