Most banks compound FD interest quarterly. Post office time deposits for October–December 2026 pay 6.9% (1 yr), 7.0% (2 yr), 7.1% (3 yr) and 7.5% (5 yr). Interest is taxable at your slab rate.
Frequently asked questions
How is FD interest calculated?
Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), where P is the deposit, r the yearly rate, n how many times a year interest is added (4 for quarterly) and t the years.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes — it's added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS if your interest from that bank crosses the yearly limit, unless you submit Form 15G/15H.
Do senior citizens get more?
Most banks pay seniors 0.25–0.50% extra. Just enter the senior rate.
