How to convert WAV to MP3

  1. Add your WAV file by choosing it or dropping it onto the converter.
  2. Choose the bitrate (optional). Open Options: 96, 128 (the default), 192, 256 or 320 kbps. There's also a channels setting if you want mono for a voice recording.
  3. Click Convert and download your MP3.

How much smaller will it be?

WAV stores audio uncompressed, which is why the files are so large. CD-quality stereo WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) uses about 10.6 MB for every minute. MP3 reduces that dramatically:

FormatApprox. size per minuteA 4-minute song
WAV (CD quality)10.6 MB42 MB
MP3 at 320 kbps2.4 MB9.6 MB
MP3 at 192 kbps1.4 MB5.8 MB
MP3 at 128 kbps1.0 MB3.8 MB

Which bitrate should I use?

  • Music: 192 kbps is a good balance of quality and size; use 256–320 kbps if you want the closest match to the WAV.
  • Podcasts, interviews and voice recordings: 96–128 kbps is usually plenty, and choosing mono halves the data again for single-voice recordings.
  • Sharing quickly or by email: 128 kbps keeps files small enough to attach.

Keep your WAV as the master

Converting to MP3 is a one-way trip. MP3 is a lossy format, so it permanently discards some sound detail, and you can't get that back by converting the MP3 to WAV afterwards. If you may edit or re-export the recording later, keep the original WAV and make MP3s from it as needed.

When people convert WAV to MP3

  • Emailing or uploading recordings that are too big as WAV.
  • Putting music or voice recordings on a phone, a player or a website.
  • Publishing a podcast episode or sharing a rough mix.
  • Freeing up space after recording with a digital recorder or audio software that saves WAV.

Is it private?

Yes. The WAV is read and encoded to MP3 inside your browser, so your recording never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes, with no signup. Free conversions handle one file at a time, with no account needed. Pro adds batches of up to 100 files.

Is there a file size limit?

Because everything happens in your browser, the practical limit is your device's memory. The recording is decoded all at once, so very long recordings (hours of audio) may need a computer rather than a phone.

Will it keep the sample rate?

Not necessarily. Your browser decodes audio at its own rate, usually 44.1 or 48 kHz, and the MP3 is made at that rate. For listening you won't hear a difference. If you need an exact sample rate for professional work, use dedicated audio software.

Can I get the WAV back from the MP3?

You can convert an MP3 back to WAV, but it won't restore what MP3 discarded. The WAV will just be a larger file with the same sound as the MP3.
