How to convert MP3 to WAV
- Add your MP3 file by choosing it or dropping it onto the converter.
- Click Convert. There's little to configure: Options lets you choose mono or stereo. Otherwise the WAV keeps your MP3's channels.
- Download the WAV.
What to expect
An MP3 is already compressed, and converting it to WAV doesn't bring back any sound that MP3 discarded. What you get is the MP3's sound stored without further compression. The result will sound the same as the MP3, in a file that is roughly five to eleven times larger, depending on the MP3's bitrate. A 4-minute song that was about 4–6 MB as an MP3 comes out at about 42 MB as a CD-quality WAV.
So why convert MP3 to WAV?
- Editing without further loss. Every time you save an MP3 again, it is re-compressed and loses a little more. WAV is uncompressed, so you can edit and save repeatedly in audio software without extra degradation.
- Software and hardware that need WAV. Some audio editors, samplers, hardware devices, game tools and broadcast workflows accept WAV but not MP3.
- Burning audio CDs with software that expects uncompressed audio.
- Sampling and production. Producers often work in WAV so that effects and edits aren't compressed again.
MP3 vs WAV
| MP3 | WAV | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Lossy — discards some detail | Uncompressed — keeps everything it's given |
| File size (CD-quality stereo) | About 1 MB a minute at 128 kbps | About 10.6 MB a minute |
| Best for | Listening, sharing, streaming | Editing, mastering, hardware that needs it |
| Compatibility | Plays almost everywhere | Plays almost everywhere too, but files are big |
Tips
- If you have the original recording (a WAV or other lossless file), edit that instead of the MP3. Quality can only go down from the MP3.
- Make sure you have the space. WAV files are big, and long recordings take a lot of memory to convert in a browser.
- Need a small file again afterwards? Convert WAV to MP3 when you've finished editing.
Is it private?
Yes. The MP3 is decoded and written out as WAV entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes, with no signup. Free conversions handle one file at a time, with no account needed. Pro adds batches of up to 100 files.
Does converting to WAV improve the sound?
No. It can't recover detail that was removed when the MP3 was made. The benefit is that further edits and saves won't degrade it any more.
Why is the WAV so much bigger?
Because WAV stores every sample without compression. CD-quality stereo needs about 1,411 kbps, against 128–320 kbps for a typical MP3.
Will the metadata (title, artist) be kept?
No. The WAV is created from the audio only, so MP3 tags aren't copied across.
