How phonetic typing works

You don't need a special keyboard. Type the sound of a word using ordinary English letters and it appears in your language's own script. Typing namaste gives नमस्ते and sat sri akaal gives ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ. This is called transliteration, and it's the easiest way to type an Indian language on a laptop or phone that only has an English keyboard.

How the tool converts your words

Two layers work together. The first is Quikbench's own rule-based converter, which turns each word into the script the moment you finish it by pressing space or typing punctuation, so you always get an instant result. The second is optional extra help: right after a word is converted, the tool asks Google's public transliteration service for smarter guesses and shows them as clickable suggestions, which helps with words whose spelling is ambiguous when written in English letters. If you're offline or that service is slow, the instant conversion still works.

Tips for better results

  • Doubling a vowel gives its long sound. In Hindi, a gives अ and aa gives आ; i gives इ and ee gives ई.
  • Each language page has a typing chart showing the letter combinations for its consonants, vowels and special marks. Keep it open while you learn.
  • If a word comes out wrong, click one of the suggestions above the text box, or retype the word with a slightly different spelling.
  • Copy or download. When you're done, copy the text or download it as a .txt file to paste into an email, document or message.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. The tools work in your browser on a computer or phone, with no account and no download.

Is what I type saved?

Nothing you type is stored by us. If you use the optional smart suggestions, each word you finish is sent to Google's transliteration service so it can suggest alternatives, in the same way search autocomplete works; the whole document is never sent.

Will the text work in other apps?

Yes. The result is ordinary Unicode text, so you can paste it into email, WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs or a website.

Why does my phone not show some letters?

Very old phones and software may lack fonts for some scripts. Updating your phone's system or using a current browser fixes this.
