Frequently asked questions

What is Kruti Dev?

Kruti Dev (most often Kruti Dev 010) is an old Hindi font that is still used in many government offices, courts and typing exams. It isn't real Unicode Hindi: it draws Hindi letters on top of English keyboard codes, so without the font the text looks like random letters such as “Hkkjr”.

Why convert Kruti Dev to Unicode?

Unicode Hindi works everywhere — Google, WhatsApp, email, websites, Google Docs and new versions of Word — and can be searched. Kruti Dev text only looks right on a computer that has the font installed.

How do I use the Kruti Dev result?

Copy the converted text into MS Word, PageMaker or CorelDRAW and change the font to Kruti Dev 010. The English-looking letters turn back into Hindi.

Does it handle half letters, ि and र्?

Yes. The short i sign (ि), which Kruti Dev types before the letter, and the reph (र् above a letter), which it types after, are moved to the right place, along with half letters, conjuncts like क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र and nukta letters like ड़ and ज़.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

Does it support Chanakya or DevLys?

Not yet — this converter is for Kruti Dev 010, the most common legacy Hindi font. Chanakya and DevLys use different key layouts.

Kruti Dev and Unicode, in plain words

Unicode is the modern standard: every Hindi letter has its own code, so it shows correctly on every phone and computer. Kruti Dev is a font trick from before Unicode — the letters are stored as English characters and the font paints them as Hindi. That's why Kruti Dev text pasted into WhatsApp or Google looks like gibberish, and why government typing tests that still use Kruti Dev need a converter.

Tips for a clean conversion

  • Copy the text straight from the Word or PageMaker file, not from a PDF (PDFs often mix up the order of letters).
  • Check names and rare conjuncts after converting — a few old documents use non-standard key combinations.
