Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Every photo is read and compared inside your browser, on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
How does it find duplicates?
It makes a small visual fingerprint of each photo, so it recognises the same picture even if it was resized, re-saved or slightly edited — not just byte-for-byte copies. Choose how alike photos must be: “nearly identical” is the safest; “similar” also groups shots of the same scene.
Which copy does it keep?
The one with the most pixels, then the sharpest, then the largest file. You can change any choice by ticking or unticking photos before doing anything.
Will it delete my photos?
Never automatically. In Chrome or Edge on a computer, it can move the photos you tick into a folder called “Quikbench review - to delete” inside the folder you chose — you look through it and delete it yourself. In other browsers you get a list (CSV) of the files to remove.
Does it work with iPhone photos (HEIC)?
Safari can read HEIC photos, so on a Mac use Safari for HEIC folders. Chrome and Edge can't open HEIC, and those photos are counted as skipped. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF work in every browser.
How many photos can it check?
Up to 5,000 at a time. A few hundred photos take seconds; thousands take a few minutes, depending on your device. For huge libraries, clean one folder (one year or one trip) at a time.
How to clean up a photo folder
- Choose a folder — or select photos — and wait while each one is checked on your device.
- Review the groups. The best copy is marked Keep; the rest are ticked for removal. Change anything you like.
- Check the blurry ones and tick any you don't want.
- Move or list them. In Chrome or Edge they go to a review folder; elsewhere, download the list and delete them yourself.
Tip: back up anything precious first. This tool never deletes files itself, but it's always good practice before a big clean-up.
