Australia's GST is a single flat rate of 10% on most goods and services — there's no multi-slab system like some other countries. A short list of categories are GST-free instead (most basic food, many health and education services, exports), and a few specific items use special rules. Always confirm whether your specific goods/services are GST-free with current ATO guidance.

How the Australia GST calculator works

Adds GST on top of a price, or — in "remove" mode — treats your entered amount as a GST-inclusive total and backs out the price excluding GST and the GST portion. Since Australia uses one flat 10% rate rather than multiple slabs, this is simpler than GST/VAT calculators for countries with tiered rates.

All calculations run entirely in your browser — there's no upload, no account, and no server involved at any point. Results update live as you type.

Worked example

A sole trader invoices a client AU$1,100 as a GST-inclusive amount. Using "remove GST" mode, this calculator divides by 1.1 to get a GST-exclusive price of AU$1,000 and a GST component of AU$100 — the standard shortcut for a flat 10% rate, since GST-inclusive ÷ 1.1 always gives the pre-GST price. Going the other direction, a AU$1,000 price simply gets 10% added on top for a AU$1,100 total.

When you need to register for GST

GST registration is mandatory once your business turnover reaches AU$75,000 in a 12-month period (AU$150,000 for non-profits), as set by the ATO. Below that, registration is optional — some businesses register anyway so they can claim GST credits on business purchases, at the cost of having to add GST to their own invoices. Rideshare and taxi drivers must register regardless of turnover. Confirm current thresholds directly on ato.gov.au, since they can change.

Frequently asked questions

Australia's GST is a flat 10%. Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.10 to get the GST-inclusive total, or this calculator can do it instantly in either direction.

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11 to get the GST amount (since GST is 1/11th of the total when GST is included at 10%). This calculator handles that calculation for you automatically.
