How to Type in Hindi Without a Hindi Keyboard

You don't need a special keyboard, or to learn a new layout, to type Hindi. If you can write a Hindi word in English letters, the way people do in text messages, you can have it converted into proper Devanagari. This guide explains how that works, the one rule that makes the biggest difference to accuracy, and how to deal with the words that don't come out right first time.

How phonetic typing works

Phonetic typing, also called transliteration, turns the sound of a word into the matching letters of another script. You type namaste, press space, and it becomes नमस्ते. There's no layout to memorise, because you're using the English letters you already know. It works on any computer or phone with an English keyboard, and the result is ordinary text you can paste anywhere.

The one rule that matters most: double the vowel for a long sound

Hindi has short and long vowels, and the difference changes the word. English spelling doesn't mark it, so you have to. Type aa for the long आ, ee for ई and oo for ऊ. Compare these, which come straight from the Quikbench Hindi typing tool:

You typeYou getWhy
bharatभरतShort a only: a name, not the country
bhaaratभारतLong aa gives the long ा

That single habit, doubling the long vowels, fixes most mistakes.

Letter combinations worth knowing

TypeYou getTypeYou get
aaआkhख
eeईghघ
ooऊchhछ
aiऐjhझ
auऔTh and Dhठ and ढ
shशMं

Capital letters give the "other" sound. Lowercase sh gives श, but a capital S gives ष, as in bhaaShaa → भाषा.

Words to try

Every one of these was checked against the tool:

Typing names

Names are where phonetic typing gets tricky, because most have several valid spellings. Say the name aloud, write each sound, double the long vowels, and check the result. If it isn't how you'd write it, try a variation or pick one of the suggestions the tool offers. It's worth getting a name right once and saving it somewhere you can copy it from.

What the suggestions are for

The Quikbench tool uses two layers. Its own rule-based engine converts each word the instant you press space, with no waiting. Right after, it also asks Google's transliteration service for smarter guesses, which it shows as clickable chips above the text. That's useful for ambiguous spellings, where a fixed rule can only guess. The privacy trade-off is that each finished word, not the whole document, is sent to Google to get those suggestions. If you're offline, the instant conversion still works.
