What does Old Photo Repair fix?
Physical damage on old prints and scans: scratches, cracks, tears, creases, dust spots and fading. It also gently improves overall clarity. For missing pieces of a photo (a torn-off corner), it fills in what it can, but large missing areas can't be recreated exactly.
Will it change what people look like?
No — that's the point of this tool. It repairs the damage around and across faces while keeping the real people's features. We chose this AI specifically because newer “generative” restorers produced sharper photos but visibly redrew faces, which isn't what you want for family photos.
Can I colorize or sharpen the photo afterwards?
Yes. Under each repaired photo, tap Colorize to add natural color, or Sharpen faces to bring blurry faces into focus. The repaired photo opens straight in that tool — no need to download and re-upload.
Should I turn off “Repair scratches, tears & creases”?
Leave it on for photos with visible damage. Turn it off for photos that are just faded, grainy or a little blurry — it then focuses on overall clarity instead of looking for scratches.
How long does it take and what does it cost?
About 40 seconds per photo (occasionally a little longer the first time) and 3 credits per photo — every account with a confirmed email gets 4 free credits a day, enough for one repair. If a photo can't be repaired, its credits are refunded automatically.
What kind of scan works best?
A clear, well-lit scan or photo of the print, taken straight on without glare. Photos up to 15 MB are accepted; very large scans are resized to around 2 megapixels for the AI.
