How to Remove a Background From a Photo
Removing the background from a photo used to mean careful hand-tracing in an editor. AI tools now do it in seconds, and the results are good enough for online shops, slides, profile pictures and social posts. This guide explains what you get, how to get a clean result, and where background removal isn't the right tool.
What background removal does
The AI works out which part of the picture is the subject and which is background, then makes everything except the subject transparent. The result is saved as a PNG, because PNG can hold transparency and JPG can't. With the background gone, you can place the subject on a colour, a pattern, another photo or a slide.
How to do it
- Open the AI Background Remover and choose one photo, or up to 20 at once.
- Click Remove background. Each photo costs 2 credits, and your 4 free daily credits cover two cut-outs.
- Check the result with the before/after slider, then download each PNG or a ZIP of them all.
What makes a good source photo
- A clear subject that stands apart from what's behind it. A person in a dark jacket against a pale wall is easy; a green plant against green leaves is hard.
- Even light. Harsh shadows and glare can leave patches that confuse the edge.
- Sharp focus. A blurry edge gives a blurry cut.
- A plain background where you can choose one. It's the single biggest help.
Hair and fur are handled well, but no tool gets every edge right. Zoom in and check around hair, fingers, thin straps and anything semi-transparent such as glass, smoke or netting.
Fixing a rough edge
- A pale halo around the subject usually shows when the new background is much darker than the old one. Place the cut-out on a background close in tone to the original, or soften the edge slightly in your editor.
- Missing wisps of hair are the commonest flaw. A busy new background hides them better than a plain one.
- Try another photo. If you took several, the one with the best contrast gives the cleanest result.
Putting the subject on a new background
The cut-out is just the subject. To add a background, drop the PNG onto a colour or image in any editor, presentation or design app: a slide, a poster, a social template. Keep your original photo, so you can redo it if you change your mind.
Product photos for online shops
Many marketplaces ask for a plain white background on the main product image, and a clean cut-out on white looks consistent across a catalogue. A few tips:
- Shoot every product at a similar angle and distance so they look like a set.
- Keep a little space around the product when you place it, rather than cropping tight.
- Compress the final image for the web, since shops load faster with smaller files. The Image Compressor can hit an exact size, and our guide to image formats explains which to use.
ID photos are different
A passport, visa or exam-form photo needs more than a removed background: an exact size, a specific background colour, correct head size and often a file-size limit. For those, use the AI Passport Photo Maker, which handles all of it. Our guide to taking a passport photo at home covers each country's rules.
Good to know
- Working size. The AI handles images up to about 2 megapixels (roughly 1,600 × 1,250 pixels), so a larger photo is reduced to that size first. That's ample for listings, slides and social posts, but it isn't full size for large prints. The tool tells you before you spend credits.
- Privacy. This is an AI tool, so your photo is sent to our server and an AI service to produce the cut-out, and isn't kept afterwards.
